90° water temperatures push fish deeper and cause a later bite in the day.

Pictured here is a beautiful blackfin tuna caught by Melissa Baker aboard "Sweet Melissa"" out of Hillsboro Inlet. The bite was slow all day as I was in contact with several charter boats and recreational anglers that struggled to put a fish in the boat. "Sweet Melissa" ventured out two hours before sunset and the fishing turned red hot! Shane Baker informed me that the bigger tuna were all caught on the planer and the smaller tuna were caught on the top line daisy chains. With the extreme heat, you will notice that the planer, which brings down the bait to around forty feet, will most likely get hit more often than the top baits while trolling near shore. The surface temperature on the reef the other day was 90°, in 100 feet of water, and the gulf stream temperature well offshore was 91.5°, which is extreme! That would actually melt the wax off of your surfboard, which is crazy if you think about it!
If you are fishing locally this weekend, try to get some baits down deep. Even if you're going to use live bait, don't be afraid to put a lead, which will sink the bait down above the swivel. Blackfin tuna schools will be surrounded by wahoo, so don't be surprised to see several big wahoo hit the deck this weekend.
Farther offshore, the swordfish bite picked up a bit as we saw several fish hit the dock over 100 pounds. The fish that were caught this week were filled with squid, which is a great sign, indicating that bait has finally moved into the area. The best of the fishing this week was between Fort Lauderdale and Hillsboro inlet, not farther south as in previous weeks.
