Big snapper and sailfish may be the ticket this weekend.

Big snapper and sailfish may be the ticket this weekend.

This is a whopper mutton snapper caught by Carl Jernstedt a few days back. They don't really get much bigger than these 18 pounder locally. I have seen a handful caught over 20 pounds but this sure is a trophy fish. Carl was using live bait fished from a 20 foot of 50lb fluorocarbon leader and a circle hook. Mutton snappers are being caught around the reef in 125 feet of water. These fish are caught on the bottom with a sliding egg lead which varies based on the current. While they were fishing for snapper, they were putting live ballyhoo out on the surface and catching sailfish. Lots of local anglers caught multiple sails this week and the bite should continue through the weekend with great weather approaching.

The boats that were trolling this week did catch a handful of nice wahoo and kingfish. The mahi bite was extremely slow all week and the swordfish bite was almost nonexistent for the anglers that made the trip.

One thing that's great about fishing off our coast as the conditions change daily so call the shop to get an accurate fishing report.

For an up to the minute fishing report tune in to Big 105.9 the Paul Castronovo Papas Pilar fishing report Friday mornings at 6:20 AM.

Stay safe!
