Well, it sure was exciting to see the success over the last week for all of the local sword fishermen. Local fishermen were greeted with the best bite of the year with boats catching up to 8 fish per trip. We have had somewhat of a dry spell over the last several months which was a bit concerning. You can really never predict the arrival or departure of these swords because their existence locally relies directly on bait such as squid and eels. If we knew where the bait was, we could always find the fish. Fishermen stated that swords caught were hooked primarily on the tip rod which is lower in the water column. Most boats fish several rods that are positioned in different locations. The squid tentacle and bonito baits were the top choices for anglers over the last week. The fish pictured here is 250 pounds and several bigger fish were landed. We are hoping the bait schools stay local for a few weeks.
The mahi bite was also excellent all week with anglers catching fish both near shore and farther offshore. The mahi bite has been the most consistent we have seen it in several years. The wahoo and tuna bite backed off a bit this week.
