Pictured here is Ari Albinder, Mike Busse and Jim with a big swordfish hanging up at the Port 32 Nauti Dawg Marina. This sword was over 400 pounds and put up a great fight! This crew has definitely put in some time on the water. The best of the swordfish bite has been in the 1600 to 1700 foot range with baits positioned several hundred feet off the bottom. We are seeing some very big swordfish coming to the docks over the last several weeks and if it is your dream to catch a big fish, this is probably the best time of the year other than October and November for big fish. These fish are traveling through the area. They are not staying here for long. The only thing that really keeps these big swords here is bait and we are noticing that the stomachs are not filled with much quality bait so they may be moving on shortly. We will see the big fish bite pick up again later on in the year.
With all of the seaweed around people are still catching mahi-mahi up to around 15 pounds. Most of the fish are in the 2 to 3 pound range which is not very big but a good thing to see. One odd observation that we are noticing is that a lot of the seaweed does not have the normal amount of life around it. Usually, we see smaller fish swimming under these patches but most of the weed is void of life. Closer to shore the kingfish and wahoo bite was consistent most of the week. Blackfin tuna were also being caught in the 300 to 400 foot range.
