Pictured here is Mike Benson and crew with a 49-pound kingfish caught a few days back. Over the last week anglers have been greeted with big kings that usually are caught north of Palm Beach into the Jupiter area. This time of the year most tournament kingfish are targeted in locations other than our local waters. It was so awesome to get bit up by the kings right off Hillsboro Inlet. Mike and his crew are at the top of the game when it comes to live bait and tournament fishing. This fish was caught using kites with live bait. Over the years we have learned mostly from divers that batches of cold water that move into the local waters really have a negative impact on fishing. Jupiter and the surrounding area are dealing with a cold-water issue at the moment and we are the recipient now of their trophy kings. On a charter several days ago, we caught several fish up to 20 pounds trolling, which is much higher than the average 6-to-8-pound fish. We don't know how long this water will stay, but we sure are enjoying and reaping the rewards.
Farther offshore the swordfish bite was relatively slow this past week. Chris Koulvares and Bruce Miner both caught fish between 150 and 350 pounds but there were a lot of boats fishing that got skunked, including us. Hopefully the bite will pick up this week.
The weather looks great for Saturday and Sunday so get out fishing!
The storms are getting really bad in the afternoon with the increase in hot weather conditions. Be careful if you see a southwest wind as the land storms will push off and fire up offshore. Several small boats had issues last weekend when a storm blew up around the swordfish grounds and started blowing 50 knots. Bad stuff happens quickly so be prepared. Be sure to monitor your radar and if you have Starlink, you can use your phone. Monitor channel 10 while fishing offshore if you have no radio and ask for assistance and the forecast from those who have radars.
