Fishing is really picking up so get out there and get tight!

As I am writing this article, the fishing is off the chain. John Bassett senior just came into the store and said the big tuna are officially here. He also said that the mahi-mahi and sailfish bite was excellent mid-week. They caught several blackfin tuna up to 30 pounds which is almost as big as they get. They were fishing with live bait from 100 feet out to 250 feet of water. Mid-week conditions were a bit rough, but the fish were snapping. We are looking forward to a productive weekend as there are several local tournaments in the area. These tournaments now are centered on meat fish which include mahi, cobia, wahoo, tuna and kingfish.

For the boats that were trolling this week, the tuna were much smaller ranging between three and 10 pounds. We do not catch the bigger tuna while trolling most of the time as they prefer the live bait. The kingfish were in the 10 to 15 pound class which is a nice fish and perfect for the smoker. We have been utilizing the Hook and Cook option at the Port 32 Lighthouse Point Marina, Nauti Dawg restaurant lately. They will cook up your fish, just bring it in!

The swordfish bite is still consistent with fish up to 300 pounds. It looks like this weekend we will be able to sneak out for a swordfish as the weather subsides, and the seas get beautiful. The choice of bait right now is the squid tentacle.
Pictured here is the Gordon James family with a nice catch aboard the Lisa B out of Port 32 this week.
