Pictured here is Doug Schaffer holding up a beast of a wahoo that he caught on a trip earlier this week out of Lighthouse Point. This fish ate a bonito strip on the long planer and was caught trolling at around 8 knots.
Doug is a great freelance mate and fishes on some of the best local boats, both private and in the charter business. Doug caught four wahoo over 40 pounds this week.
One of the great things about having good fishermen working at our shop, RJ Boyle Studio, is the ability for boat owners to hire a sharp mate to fish the local waters. Learning firsthand from a local can really help you not only catch fish but also learn how to fish the waters in this area.
Fish of this quality are difficult to land and can be equally hard to locate at times. Some days, fishing around wrecks may be the ticket, while on other days, temperature breaks and current edges prove to be more productive.
If you are local, you may want to consider hiring a mate for a few trips to lay the groundwork for the future of your local fishing. Reach out to us at the shop, and we can get you dialed in with a top-notch mate. In addition, we can also guide you in the right direction for a freelance captain. If you need assistance driving or navigating the waters, we’ve got you covered. Call the shop for more details.
The sailfish were biting throughout the week, and anglers who ventured offshore caught mahi up to 20 pounds. If you get a chance to get out fishing this weekend, try to get an early start, as the heat is brutal. The best fishing was in the early morning and before sunset.
Tight lines!
