Pictured here is John Bassett with a hefty wahoo caught a few days back aboard the John B. This fish was our first bite of the day, and it came on the short planer rod. We were pulling bonito strips with a pink and a crystal sea witch and a 12/0 planer hook.
Over a four-hour trip, we managed to catch seven kingfish, two barracudas, and one wahoo. We did miss a few fish, but we heard there were lots of undersized kingfish around.
Farther offshore, the mahi-mahi bite was great again. There were areas of seaweed that produced fish up to 15 pounds. Hopefully, the wind will subside by Sunday and give us a chance to get back out there.
I did see that we have a named storm, the first of the season, and hopefully it will stay farther west and not have an effect on South Florida or our fishing.
The swordfish bite was extra slow this week, and the squid have moved in, making it difficult to fish. These squid get lodged on the tip of the hook and make the bait spin.
One thing you can pretty much count on right now is good yellowtail snapper fishing. If you need to get set up to catch yellowtails, give us a call at the shop.
