Near shore fishing is consistent!

Nearshore fishing has been consistent, with schools of bonito around. This is a picture of our catch from the "Lisa B" earlier this week.

Some people eat bonito, but most people don’t. Bonito are in the tuna family but do not have the same quality as table fare. Locally, we use bonito for bait, cutting strips for trolling and chunks for bottom fishing and mahi. Bonito put up quite a fight and are fun to catch while also supplying our boats with bait.

When we catch bonito, we know that other quality pelagic fish are nearby, as they feed on these fish. Wahoo, kingfish, and sailfish are what we typically catch this time of year, with a few tuna mixed in.

The mahi-mahi that have been biting recently have been a wonderful addition to our local fishing, but they are much less consistent than the wahoo and sailfish. September is also one of our best months for snapper, so as we get closer to the full moon, give mutton snapper a try.

The storms in the afternoon have been brutal, so please be careful on the ocean.
