Pictured here is an Eddie Walters charter aboard the "Reel Addiction" on Wednesday. They boated this beautiful wahoo and caught several nice kingfish and blackfin tuna. Wednesday was the full moon and wahoo fishing is best around the full extending two or three days on the front and back side. What's crazy is the inconsistency of the fishing right now. The day before on Tuesday we had extremely slow fishing and the seaweed was brutal. What we are noticing is that when the current slows down to almost nothing, the fishing really slows as well.
If you have traveled outside Hillsboro Inlet over the last month you have been greeted to the smell of nasty rotting seaweed. When the current slows down a lot of that weed sinks to the bottom. The weed will actually give off gases that rise to the surface, causing the rotten smell. Lots of anglers have resorted to trolling weedless baits. We have been selling a lot of rigged squid with the hook hidden inside the mantle of the body. These baits are perfect for mahi-mahi and don't get caught on the weed. Stopping every several minutes to reel in your bait really becomes a pain in the butt.
Farther offshore the swordfish bite was terrible this week. We got skunked on a trip Monday. We never had a sniff in 12 hours of fishing. Historically, we catch bigger fish around the full moon, but the bite is much slower. The swords have a tendency to eat throughout the night with a full moon and the daytime bite slows.
