Giant bluefin tuna and swordfish are chewing offshore.

Giant bluefin tuna and swordfish are chewing offshore.

Pictured here is the Creighton family with an absolutely beautiful swordfish that we caught aboard the "Lisa B" last weekend. The swordfish bite has been excellent all week as fish like this in the 200 pound range were frequent. We made two drops for swords and got a bite on both drops. The bait of choice for us was bonito and the depth was 1725 feet of water. Lots of boats encountered mahi mahi while they were waiting on the sword bite. There is tons of scattered seaweed making it difficult at times to troll but there are definitely mahi out there.
Anglers fishing for swords from Miami to Sebastian were also greeted with the best bluefin tuna bite of all time. We had 16 reports of bluefin being caught in one day. This is absolutely crazy and has never happened in these numbers before. The northern migration of the giants ranging from 400-700 pounds will not last that long so get out there in the next few days. Most of the guys hooking up to tuna did so on the buoy rod that was positioned several hundred feet off the bottom. These tuna once they eat the bait will travel quickly to the surface and then right back down to the bottom. Most of the stories regarding how the fish fight were very similar. If you hook a big Tuna, you can expect to be fighting it for several hours. Everybody that I spoke to released the tuna because they were bigger than 73 inches which is the size limit. Closer to shore we saw lots of smaller blackfin tuna and a few wahoo. The seaweed seems to be a day to day issue with some days being better than others.
