Local fishing is firing on all cylinders but you gotta have a plan!

Local fishing is firing on all cylinders but you gotta have a plan!

This is my favorite time of the year to be in the charter business. We have the ability to target so many things right now during a six-hour trip aboard our charter boat "Lisa B". We usually start out trolling for a wahoo during the early hours. We fish between 150 and 300 feet of water. Fortunately, we catch the blackfin tuna in the same area. At the two-hour mark with a few tunas in the box and a possible wahoo we push closer to shore between 100 and 150 feet of water and slow down to 6 knots while we look to catch a few kingfish over an hour time span. We usually travel north and work the kings off Boca.

After the three hour mark the sun is up high and we have a decision to make. We will either run offshore for mahi or fish the kites for sailfish and tuna nearshore. We like the sun to be higher in the sky so as we travel offshore we can see floating debris that will hold mahi.We will spend the next two hours looking for the mahi, tuna and sails. At the five hour mark we usually like to close out the trip by catching a few bottom fish such as grouper and snapper for the dinner table.  We do this between 200 and 400 feet of water. Pictured here is yours truly and Joey Falasca with his first ever snowy grouper that we caught in 400 feet of water this week. Having a plan that covers several fisheries makes the time go so fast and you will most likely have success in one of the areas mentioned.
Always have a plan!
