As I am writing this report, we are gearing up for a three day swordfish weekend. We are hosting a swordfish clinic aboard the "Lisa B out of the Nauti dawg restaurant and marina in Lighthouse Point as of now it looks like we are going to be blessed with some great weather on Saturday and Sunday, which makes swordfishing much easier. We generally fish about 15 miles off the coast out in the gulfstream waters. The tough part of the winter months is the northeast to Northern winds that kick up against the Gulfstream current, which moves to the north. The wind against current can really make for rough sea conditions. If your goal is to catch a big sword you may want to give it a go. Several fish this week over the 300 pound mark have been caught and we had one report of a fish around 800 pounds being caught by a local angler. We suggest bringing 6 baits minimum ranging from bonito to eel to squid tentacle. The best of the fishing has been around 1700 feet of water. Make sure to have 10 and 12 pound stick lead with you for both a tiprod and a buoy rod. Mahi-mahi in the 20 to 30 pound range are showing up welloffshore. Several anglers caught fish 20 to 25 miles off of the beach this week. If you are going Swordfishing, be sure to have a spinning rod ready with a ballyhoo or a live bait. The mahi will swim right up to the boat.
Closer to shore the snapper wahoo and sailfish bite has all been consistent. If you are looking to catch the blackfin tuna, be sure to get up early or stay late as the bite has been best right before dark.
