The sailfish bite has been excellent the last few days between Highland Beach and Delray. Quite a few local boats have turned north outside of the inlet and ventured even further throughout the week. Most of the action was on live bait. Several of the boats that we spoke to caught fish on both goggle eye, sardines and pilchard. The fish were traveling in packs as hooking double and triple headers were the norm if you got covered up. The best depth was actually on the shallow side around 100 feet of water. One interesting thing about these fish was that most of them were very small, barely weighing over 20 pounds. Usually, sailfish will simply swallow baits quickly, but on some of our flat line bites, we noticed the smaller fish struggling to eat some of the bigger baits we were fishing. We don't know if the sailfish bite will last through the weekend, but I would suggest getting out before Sunday afternoon as the wind looks to increase.
Farther offshore the swordfish bite was consistent with boats catching multiple fish per trip. Not many big fish were caught this week and quite a few releases were reported. A swordfish must be 47 inches from the lower jaw to the fork in the tail to be legal. Make sure to bring a measuring tape. The swordfish were not picky this week as baits ranging from eel to bonito and squid were all successful baits.
