What a wonderful week of sailfishing we had! Pictured here with me is Aldo Addario Sr and Jr. with sailfish release flags representing juniors first two sailfish caught. The big bite started last weekend in the Sailfish Challenge tournament. Captain Art Sapp aboard the Native Son took top honors catching 65 sailfish in two days of fishing. The bite continued throughout the week in different locations up and down the line. Fish that were concentrated in Jupiter during the tournament moved all the way south through our area to Ocean reef and the Key Largo area. The migration of fish should continue over the next 30 to 60 days depending on weather pattern. Customers have been asking if the fish are simply chasing baitfish and following them. The migration is part of their annual direction. Sailfish like to get up on top and tail down sea towards the south when conditions are right. It is almost like interstate 95 for sailfish. These fish are traveling north or south and once in a while they will get off the exit to feed much like us getting a hamburger when we get hungry. Many of the fish that are tailing to the south now will end up in Mexico. As a pelagic species they will continually move around the globe or the coastal regions.
We are starting to see some blackfin tuna as well as plenty of kingfish which was a great sign this week. Fishing near shore should be very good this weekend. Farther offshore we did have a report of some big mahi-mahi being caught around the 46 line which is about 20 miles offshore. Several fish in the 20-to-25-pound range were caught on floating debris.
