Pictured here is Eric Chandler with a Mahi and Tom Ardt with a beautiful wahoo caught a few days back aboard the "Lisa B". The full moon bite which was highly anticipated did not produce big results. Over the last week we saw subpar tuna fishing and an almost nonexistent wahoo bite. I can really say that when you think you have fishing figured out guess again. All of the elements included in great fishing were there. Northerly current, good quality water and outgoing tides at the right time were present but the fish did not cooperate out front of Hillsboro inlet and Boca. Anglers that travelled to Jupiter caught some large kingfish up to 46 pounds in the Trashcan Slam tournament and a few nice tuna were caught but overall numbers were down. The tournament itself was fantastic with a fun weigh in at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club. The captains meeting on Thursday night was rocking as well at Patrizias in the Cove shopping center where Mikaela Whitmer the tournament director and founder signed up boats and raised money to benefit autism. Mikaela has put on this tournament for 11 years and the anglers that compete in her tournament are the best of the best in our local community.
The swordfish bite was also slow this last week as we anticipated with the full moon. We generally see bigger fish around a big moon but much fewer fish. Swordfishing will pick up next week.
For the anglers that traveled to the Bahamas for the mutton snapper spawn they also had slow fishing. The only thing we can figure is that we had an approaching front that dumped several inches of rain on our area early this week. Barometric pressure may have played a part in the slow bite, but nobody really knows. The beauty of fishing is that things can change in fishing quickly so let's get ready for a great weekend!
The Saltwater Shootout put on by Jamie Bunn is happening this weekend and hopefully fishing will pick up.
Good luck to all anglers!
