Slow start to the year for fishing in our area.

Slow start to the year for fishing in our area.

Katie and Michael traveled down to Marathon in the Florida Keys this week and were lucky to capture this nice wahoo while trolling around the wrecks. They reported excellent bottom fishing specifically for mutton snapper. They caught several muttons over ten pounds using live bait fished on a circle hook and fluorocarbon 50lb leader. Lots of local anglers travel down to the Keys during January and February because the fishing is much better down there during those months. We have our good days here, but the Keys is more consistent.

Locally the fishing was inconsistent with very few anglers having much luck. Yes a few wahoo were caught in the 20-pound range and the sword fishing was good but overall catches have been down. We are hoping that the next cold front has a positive effect on the bite.
We did see a good sailfish bite mixed in over the last few days so purchasing live bait and using the kites may be the ticket for the weekend.
