The bite is picking up for pelagics both nearshore and offshore!

The bite is picking up for pelagics both nearshore and offshore!

Now this is the kind of catch we like to see in the month of April. A true mixed bag of pelagic fish is what you should expect over the next 60 days. Wahoo, mahi-mahi and blackfin tuna sure make a half day trip exciting. This is a catch from the "Lisa B" earlier this week. These fish were all caught while trolling, but both live bait and trolled bait have been successful. We never got outside of 400 feet of water to catch everything you see here which is fantastic for the wallet. We are seeing plenty of weed line activity and a lot of undersized mahi-mahi, which is a good sign. You may have to throw back a few undersized fish, but there are some 5 to 8 pound fish to be had.
Farther offshore the swordfish bite is still excellent with boats catching fish up to 400 pounds. The bites this week seemed to be up in the water column a bit so don't be afraid to fish the buoy rod 200-300 feet off the bottom.
The weed extends farther out up until about 20 miles off so keep an eye out for floating debris which will hold larger mahi. Lots of anglers traveled to Bahamian waters in search of yellowfin tuna this week and the bite was red hot. We are seeing some larger tuna in the 60 to 80 pound range and live bait is the ticket though some boats were catching them while chunking sardines.  Most boats also loaded up with mahi well offshore while in route to the tuna grounds.
If you happen to find larger sized floating debris do not forget to drop jigs down under the object to catch a few wahoo. Try using a small section of flourocarbon to your jig and not wire as the wahoo will shy off of the jig rigged with wire. Simply drop the jig down 150 feet and retrieve as fast as you. Do not jig the rod as the wahoo will cut you off. A straight retrieve is what you need.
Happy Easter to all!
