The mullet run has begun in our neck of the woods. We had rather large ground swell activity over the last week or, so which is probably the main reason for the mullet move. Mullet are traveling in huge schools right now in shallow water along the beach making it easy to target tarpon, snook and jacks. The mullet are moving towards the south and you can see these schools getting blown up by all of the species feeding on them. Some anglers are throwing live mullet into the school while others are fishing cut bait underneath on the bottom. Still other anglers are using artificial lures and casting them past the school and dragging through hoping for a bite. Either way, and anyway you fish you can probably get a bite right now from these predators working the schools. You can fish from the beach, or you can fish from a boat, but if you are using a skiff or small boat be aware of the east-northeast ground swell that may not show itself for 10 or 15 minutes. These random swells can capsize a boat quickly if you're not paying attention.
Father offshore, the wahoo bite was good this week yielding fish up to 30 pounds. Most of the fish were caught while trolling and planers. The blackfin tuna bite was also consistent this week with fish up to 15 pounds. We had a few reports of swordfish being caught on the smaller side less than 100 pounds and a few no catch reports.
We are looking forward to a great weekend and don't forget to check out the beach on your way out for the snook and tarpon bite!
Get tight!
