We sure have had great weather recently and some anglers are putting up great catches of fish depending on the day. They say it is better to be lucky than good and I may have to agree with this. While some anglers are having success, others are struggling. We have been catching tuna, mahi-mahi, and plenty of wahoo this week on calm seas but it looks like the wind is going to pick up a bit this weekend. What we are noticing is that in a six-hour span of fishing, we may catch all of our fish within 30 minutes. What's happening is bait schools are spread out, and we are having to travel by trolling to locate the fish. The mahi and tuna pictured here were on the deeper side in around 450 feet of water. A loan frigate bird picking on the water was a dead giveaway for all of the mahi here. We caught all of these beautiful mahi in 15 minutes off of one bird. The small tuna were schooled up deeper than normal and that is also where we caught the wahoo, which was feeding on them. If you are fishing this weekend, I would highly suggest covering ground out to about 600 feet of water. With the northeast wind I believe we are going to see a great sailfish bite this weekend so if you love billfish, you may want to break out the kites and buy a few live baits. The swordfish bite tapered off a bit this week. We spent several hours without a bite a few days back. Swordfishing should improve next weekend with the change of the moon.
