One of the great things to look forward to as we get farther into May and June is the mutton spawn. Mutton snapper fishing over the last several years has been fantastic locally in the months of May, June, July and August. Pictured here is Captain Kody's Wednesday charter out of Key West. Not only does he target mutton snapper but also cubera snapper in the daytime. This is Capt. Kody's specialty along with wahoo and swordfish. If you need the contact information, please reach out to the store. We have several guides throughout the keys that we can recommend for fishing.
Locally we fish for mutton both around wrecks and along the reef. The best mutton fishing depth along the reef is generally about 125 feet to 150 feet of water. We use a long fluorocarbon leader about 30 feet with a circle hook. Above the leader, separated by a swivel, we use a sliding egg lead and we change the weight based on the speed of the current. Be sure to take leads that range from 4 ounces up to 16 ounces. You can use live or dead bait. Ballyhoo and goggle eye make excellent snapper bait. To get set up please reach out to the shop.
The boats that have ventured out this week in the rough seas were greeted to excellent fishing. Mahi-mahi up to 25 pounds were caught along with several smaller wahoo and blackfin tuna. this weekend should be fantastic with all of the east wind blowing everything near the beach. You will not have to go far to catch fish!
