The mahi-mahi bite is the best it's been in years.

Anglers are always comparing and/or complaining about the lack of fish being caught. I am here to tell you that the mahi fishing in our area is the best it has been in years! It has been so consistent that boats are targeting them offshore every day.

We are not just talking about schooling dolphin, which are often referred to as chickens or schoolies, but fish up to 20 pounds are being caught on a regular basis right now. The best of the bite is definitely farther offshore, about 15 miles out, in the same area where we catch swordfish.

Pictured here is a trip from the other day that we took aboard the "Outpost." We simply found a weed line, trolled next to it for a few hours, and caught fish.

There have definitely been years when we saw absolutely no mahi, or very few, in this area. That has to do with Gulf Stream currents and cycles of migration. Most of the fish we see come from the south, out of the Gulf of America, and their travels usually take them toward the Bahamas rather than up the Gulf Stream waters in our area.

This summer, we have seen lighter currents, which may be one reason for the great bite locally. Whatever the reason, I am so glad to see these beautiful fish, and I’m hoping they stick around for another few weeks.

In other fishing news, the wahoo bite was consistent, and we also saw a few tuna near shore in about 200 feet of water.
