We had a fantastic trip traveling to Chub Cay fishing the "Chub Cay Open" last weekend against 25 of the best billfish teams on the planet. Our first day of fishing prior to the tournament we captured 10 mahi-mahi up to 30 pounds along with a white marlin and two sailfish. The first day of the tournament we released two blue marlin and won the daily. The second day of the tournament we released a blue marlin to seal the deal and win the tournament. What an experience it was on this 68 foot Ricky Scarborough sportfish boat named "Sempre Duro". This team has a top notch Capt. Chris Stavola and crew (Dylan,Liam and Joey)from the New Jersey area and these guys are dialed in. "Sempre Duro" travels to Chub Cay for several months every year and they sure are learning the waters! Our top angler Jack Morino, who is 13 years old, won the junior angler award for the tournament! We fished an area of water between 800 and 2,000 feet deep and never really left that area as we were marking the marlin on the sonar machine. With modern day technology, you can really hone in on where a fish is but getting them to bite is a different story. Persistence paid off as Capt. Chris stayed with his plan and put us on the fish earning us top honors. In my lifetime, I've won several tournaments, but this one sure is special!
Closer to home the blackfin tuna bite heated up as boats caught fish up to 25 pounds. Wahoo were also being caught consistently until the wind started to blow. As I am writing this report the wind continues cranking so check the weather before you go out this weekend.
