RJ Boyle will be at Bahia Mar for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. We are in the main tent in booth 153, so come see us, say hello and pick up some tackle. See you there! We will be at the show through Sunday.
Big swords will be the target for many anglers in South Florida over the next several months. We see lots of bigger fish hit the dock around Halloween and the big bite will continue through new years. The fish pictured here weighs around 250 pounds. A fish this size can take around two hours to catch. Many of the fish on the bigger side traveling through now seem to have very large tails and they are called travelers. If you feel their skin, it almost has the feeling of corduroy. There are lines on the skin that represent six pack abs for swordfish. The commercial fleet has been catching lots of smaller fish at night, but this trend will change.
Swordfish caught in the day have always been much bigger than fish caught at night. The larger fish don't travel up near the surface like the smaller ones do. The mahi-mahi bite has still been excellent, but it seemed more consistent off Fort Lauderdale south to Miami. With the storm pushing through Jamaica and Cuba, we will begin to see floating debris in a few days. This will bring mahi so be ready!
Closer to shore, the kingfish bite was actually really good over the last few days with anglers limiting out on catches of two per person. The wahoo bite was slow and the snapper bite was relatively slow this week.
