Pictured here is yours truly holding a large blueline tilefish. As we enter the winter months here in South Florida this is one of the fish that we target on a regular basis. The bag limit is relatively low at a total of one per person or three within the grouper aggregate. We do capture these fish up to around 6 pounds which yields plenty of meat for the dinner table. These fish are caught between 400 and 500 feet of water in the mud. We use a chicken rig consisting of several circle hooks tipped with squid and bonito. These fish live in colonies and travel the bottom. You may have to take several drops to locate them, but if you put your time in, you should have success.
With the arrival of this cold front, we are expecting an excellent sailfish bite throughout the weekend and into next week with rough sea conditions starting Sunday. The weather forecast as of now shows 20 knot winds on Sunday through Tuesday. Always remember that in the winter months, you must check the marine weather station almost every 12 hours. The fronts that push through our area have tendencies to increase and decrease in speed which will change the forecast drastically. You do not want to get caught out in rough dangerous seas.
