Pictured here is a 505lb swordfish caught by Capt Chris Holsinger a few days back. This is a great sign as several extra large fish have hit the dock. Chris Stones landed a 400 plus on the same day. These big fish will not be around long so if it is your dream to catch a giant sword this is your time. We generally also get a push of large fish in November but seas are usually pretty rough during that time. These fish travel throughout the world, but are so mysterious, as there is not really a single migrational pattern that you can put your thumb on. We have tagged ten over the years and notice that they have very little similarity between tracks of travel. Two fish that we tagged in one day have gone in completely opposite directions. Several years ago we tagged two fish, one which ended up in the Cayman trench and the other off of Nova Scotia. We truly know very little about the swordfish when it comes to migration patterns and why they travel with inconsistent patterns. Most of the big fish caught right now are several hundred feet off of the bottom. This means that the buoy rod is getting most of the big fish action. The best of the bait has been bonito.
Nearshore the Wahoo bite was excellent this week with local boats catching up to three fish per trip in the 25 pound range. Sailfish were also chewing as a few boats caught double digits. The best of the fishing nearshore was 150 to 200 feet of water. The weather looks pretty good this weekend, but always check the marine forecast before leaving the dock.
