Max and Ryan Gormley (L to R) were the recipients of some major luck during a swordfish trip this week aboard the "Lisa B". Sword trips are full days only due to the fact that we are running around 25 miles out to the swordfish grounds. We slowly drift towards the north in the gulf stream waters waiting for a bite. You have to have patience in this type of fishing as you may only get one bite all day if you get one at all! On the flip side the reward for your patience can be fantastic. On this day the current was extremely strong making fishing difficult. There was absolutely no action all morning and things weren't looking promising midafternoon. At around 2pm the tip rod bent over with a fish. After a few minutes of fighting the fish crew felt uncertain about it being a swordfish. When the fish came close to the boat, they all realized that they had struck gold by catching a 151lb bigeye tuna! This is an extremely rare catch for our waters. As we were boating the tuna we noticed that the other rod was slack with a fish swimming the lead around. Max began fighting what ended up being a 333lb swordfish. This is the first time the Lisa B caught this combination of fish. This catch of fish was truly a prize!
Closer to shore we had decent catches of blackfin tuna and kingfish with a few mahi mixed in. The weekend fishing should be more of the same.
