Pictured here is the Russo crew with a beautiful wahoo caught while trolling off of Bimini a few days back. Several boats had huge success catching fish up to 50 pounds using high speed lures and fishing along the edge between 200 and 400 feet of water. This fishing is actually expected as the bite historically begins in October and runs through February. Wahoo love to bite before cold fronts and a pre dropping barometer situation. They can be caught during most sea conditions but do have a tendency to shut off like most pelagic fish. Locally we have seen consistent wahoo fishing with fish to around 30 pounds. Bahamian wahoo seem to be a bit bigger on average running between 30 and 40 pounds. Most guys locally use planers as opposed to high-speed lures. If you are traveling to the Bahamas, please be sure to clear customs. Upon returning to the United States be sure not to exceed bag limits. FWC has been in the Hillsboro inlet checking boats regularly.

The mahi bite has been the best between 500 and 600 feet of water with scattered weeds and floating debris. It is crazy to see the average size which has been around 10 to 12 pounds locally. This is extremely large for this area and a good sign for the future. We are experiencing the best mahi bite that we have had in years!
Farther Offshore the swordfish bite is also on fire! Fish up to 400 pounds were caught this week with anglers enjoying multiple fish days. The commercial fishing fleet has been catching record numbers of fish most of which are undersized and have been released. This is a fantastic sign and cycle in the swordfish migration. We haven't seen this number of fish being caught in several years.
It looks like the weather for the weekend is going to be rough so wait for a nice weather window before scheduling a trip. For an up-to-the-minute fishing report tune into Big 105.9 the Paul Castronovo Papa's Pilar fishing report Friday mornings at 6:20 AM with RJ Boyle
