You don't need ten different rods.

The RJ Boyle Universal Big Game Rod Series is built to cover the full scope of big game species — from daytime swordfish and deep-drop bottom fish to tuna, wahoo, and marlin.

It's offered in four actions — Extra Light, Light, Medium, and Heavy — so you can match the rod to your current, your lead weight, and your target species.

Which Action Should You Choose?

Extra Light & Light — best for low-current daytime swordfishing, bottom fish, yellowfin and blackfin tuna, and planer fishing.

Medium & Heavy — best for high-current swordfish, big bottom fish, and blue marlin.

EXTRA LIGHT  —  Built for extremely slow current swordfishing and a great planer rod, best suited for #4 and #4-6 planers.

  • Current: 0–2 knots (extremely slow)
  • Leads: up to 3 lbs
  • Guides: Halide Turbo Boat Guides with a Winthrop roller top
  • Length: 60 inches to the ferrule
  • Finish: all black with a small RJ Boyle logo

LIGHT  —  Ideal for light to moderate current swordfishing and a great planer rod, best suited for #4, #4-6, #6, and #8 planers.

  • Current: 1.5–3 knots (mild to heavy)
  • Leads: up to 6 lbs
  • Guides: Silicon Carbide guides with a Winthrop roller top
  • Length: 60 inches to the ferrule
  • Finish: all black with a small RJ Boyle logo

MEDIUM  —  Most Popular Our best-selling daytime swordfish rod and the all-around choice for most anglers. If you fish in rough seas and high current, consider the Heavy action.

  • Current: 2–4 knots (mild to heavy)
  • Leads: up to 12 lbs
  • Guides: Silicon Carbide guides with a Winthrop roller top
  • Length: 60 inches to the ferrule
  • Finish: all black with a small RJ Boyle logo

HEAVY  —  Built for big-boat (transom) and center console fishing, with the extra length to clear the back of the boat. This is the rod RJ fishes every day now in South Florida.

  • Current: 2–5 knots (mild to heavy)
  • Leads: up to 15 lbs
  • Guides: Halide Turbo Boat Guides with a Winthrop roller top
  • Length: 68 inches to the ferrule
  • Finish: all black with a small RJ Boyle logo
