We offer two buoy spools with 3 marks each: High current (over 2 knots) 1,400ft / 1,600ft / 1,800ft and Low current (under 2 knots) 1,000ft / 1,300ft / 1,600ft.
You can optionally add a 750-yard base of 80lb braid to the spool.
Compatible with most reels. Simply tie on the buoy mark to your existing braid and you are in business. We use a cat’s paw connection between the braid and the buoy mark. We suggest a minimum of 750 yards of braid as a base for your spool regardless of reel type. We offer this option as an addition to the spool. You will need to add a wind-on leader once the reel is filled.
Make sure you load the reel under some pressure. Realistically, I would load the reel at the dock and then let it out well offshore and wind in back onto the reel under pressure. This takes about 20 minutes, but you can definitely get consistent pressure if you do not have access to a line machine.
These spools are filled specifically for use on the buoy rod. We often fish 2 rods while swordfishing. Our second rod is placed in the water column above the bottom. We let our bait down to the wind-on mark that we want to fish the buoy at and put on our (Buoy Float). The wind-on mark is a wind-on leader. We place buoy marks at 3 different increments on the spool. Each mark has a loop to attach a buoy. The optional wind-on leader is a 250lb leader.
